PT Residency

Dedicated to improving the quality of clinical practice for the next generation of therapist

The University of Michigan MedSport Physical Therapy Residency program provides licensed therapists with a unique year of dedicated post graduate training in the specialty areas of sports and orthopedic rehabilitation. The resident will train with senior clinical staff with emphasis on developing skills in clinical decision making, treatment strategies, and scholarly review of the latest evidence throughout the rehab process. Clinical experience received will include post-operative orthopedic rehabilitation, general sport and orthopedic non-operative rehabilitation, return to sport assessment and training, assist in on-site athletic event coverage, concussion management and rehabilitation, and submission of a case study for publication.

Residents will develop strong clinical practice management skills by working closely with an experienced rehabilitation staff, as well as other allied health care practitioners from orthopedic surgery, primary care sports medicine, neurology, athletic training, radiology, and clinical research backgrounds. Our goal is to offer our residents experience and advanced training in all areas of care that MedSport has to offer.

Our teaching program includes:

  • Weekly 1-on-1 Clinical Mentoring
  • Weekly Regional Evaluation and Treatment Skill Development
  • Monthly Resident Case Study presentations
  • Monthly Staff Journal Club, In-service and lab based learning opportunities
  • Access to MedSport hosted continuing education courses
  • Elective learning opportunities in sub-specialty practice areas
  • Onsite Athletic and Event coverage opportunities
